July Tuesday Meditations

GOOD NEWS! Due to popular demand we are continuing Tuesday meditation for July. Looking forward to seeing you at our Tuesday meditation sessions! As usual they start at 7:30 and last roughly one hour.

If you are new to meditation we will provide a brief intro at the beginning of class to get you started. Meditation cushions are provided. Classes are free but we graciously accept donations 🙂

June Meditation Classes

Meditation in Practice (12:00-12:45)

The Japanese tea ceremony is a personal meditation and discipline based on learning methods for making tea and hospitality in order to appreciate the harmony of nature and the beauty of art, which was developed around the 15 century in Japan.

Join, Michiko Ono, tea expert and guide. She is certified by the Japanese Green Tea Association as a Japanese Green Tea (Nihon-cha) Instructor. She’s also certified as a Tea Sommelier by the Tea Association of Canada.

The first of her presentation will cover  basic information and ideas on the tea ceremony. Michiko will then share her personal experience learning and practicing the tea ceremony. Lastly, she will talk about the function of matcha tea used in the ceremony for health.

May Long Weekend Retreat Q&A (12:45-1:00)

If you were thinking about joining us for the Meditation Retreattaking place on the May Long Weekend but had some questions, stick around after Meditation in Practice. We will be hosting an informal discussion on any questions or concerns you might have about going on your first ever (or just first one with us) meditation retreat.

After our regular Sunday Dharma talk please join us for a potluck lunch and get to know the teachers and your fellow meditators.  If you are able to contribute an item to the potluck it would be greatly appreciated. Please note all dishes should be vegetarian.  If you only wish to come for the dharma talk and not stay after for the Potluck that is just fine also.

As well as celebrating the anniversary of the Bhudda’s enlightenment we are also welcoming back our teacher from a 5 month sabbatical at the International Centre for Zen Research and the start of a new year.  So much to celebrate!  After our regular Sunday Dharma talk please join us for a potluck lunch and get to know the teachers and your fellow meditators.  If you are able to contribute an item to the potluck it would be greatly appreciated.  Please note all dishes should be vegetarian.  If you only wish to come for the dharma talk and not stay after for the Potluck that is just fine also.

Sangha Sundays & Meditation Tuesdays

SUNDAYS @ 11:00am

Sangha Sunday – starting January 10 @ 11:00 am (please be punctual)

Looking to take your meditation practice a little deeper?  Want to learn more about Buddhism? Join us on Sundays for a Dharma talk, discussion, some chanting and group mediations. Sundays will alternate between more formal Dharma talks and opportunities to practice your meditation.

  • 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month are open to anyone that wants to meditate.  This is an opportunity to anchor your practice and sit in a group setting.  Individual instruction will be offered if requested.
  • 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month offer a more formal Dharma talk, discussion, chanting, and a short group meditation. Dharma talks are explanations and discussions of important Buddhist texts.

If you want to attend Sunday Sanghas but have little meditation experience, please arrive 10-15 min early & let our teacher know so you can receive instructions before official start time.

TUESDAYS @ 7:30pm

Meditation Tuesdays – starting January 12, 2016.

If you’re  new to meditation, don’t have much experience, or want to get back to basics, Tuesday’s class is perfect for you.  Learn different meditation techniques in a relaxed, comfortable and easy-going setting.

Advanced Zen meditation starting Jan 12 for 4 weeks
Equanimity mediation starting Feb 9 for 4 weeks
Buddha meditation starting March 8 for 4 weeks

A FEW THINGS TO NOTE:

  • We have meditation cushions and benches for you to use while with us However, if you have your own and would like to bring it, please do.
  • Wear comfortable, loose/ stretchy clothing (meditating in skinny jeans is not fun, trust me).
  • You may want to bring a sweater or shawl with you as the body tends to cool during meditation.
  • All classes and services are run by cash donation in what ever amount you feel comfortable with.

Special class December 6, 2015

Hey Dharma Bums,

We have been meeting the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month (11:00 am) for dharma talks and every Tuesday (7:30 pm) for meditation.

Please note, in December we will only meet on one Sunday – this coming Sunday, December 6th (11:00 am).  We will end as usual at noon.  For those that wish to stay and ask questions or just talk about Buddhism you are welcome to stay and chat.

Our Sunday meetings will then break until Sunday January 10th. Tuesday meditation will finish this coming Tuesday, December 1st and commence again Tuesday, January 12th.

Looking forward to sitting with you two more times in 2015.

Fall 2015 Classes

This Fall we are honoured to have our teacher, Shirfu Samanta, hold the position of Visiting Scholar at The International Research Institute for Zen Buddhism in Kyoto Japan.  During his absence classes will continue:

Meditation Tuesdays 

  • Every Tuesday starting September 15th.
  •  If you’re new to meditation or have experience, Tuesday’s class is perfect for you. Learn different meditation techniques in a relaxed, comfortable and easy-going setting. Great for those who enjoy the benefits of group meditation practice and want the structure of setting aside some quiet time, away from home, once a week to sit in silence and recharge your batteries.
  • Classes start at 7:30 and end at 8:30. Please arrive a little early – share some tea with us.
  • Ring the door bell on the sandwich board sign.

Sangha Sundays

  • Looking to take your meditation practice a little deeper? Want to learn more about Buddhism? Join us on Sundays for a Dharma talk, discussion, some chanting and a group mediation.
  • 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month starting September 13th and will be led by Bodhidhara Shakya and Jnyaprabha Shakya, who have trained with Shirfu for many years.
  • Service starts at 11:00 and ends sometime around 12:00. Please arrive a little early – the tea is good.
  • Ring the door bell on the sandwich board sign.
